What IP rating do I need for outdoor lights?
Reading the number
The first digit is dust, the second is water. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against jets of water. In monsoon conditions, IP65 is the floor for anything in the open.
Where fixtures fail anyway
At the gland and the cable entry, not the housing. A well-rated fixture installed with the gland pointing upward will still let water in.
