How to choose a panel light
Work backwards from the room. Decide the light level the space needs, divide by the output of one panel, and let that set the count — then check the cut-out size against the ceiling grid you already have.
Sizes you will actually find
2x2 ft and 1x4 ft panels dominate commercial ceilings. For homes, 6-inch and 8-inch round panels are the common recessed sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What size cut-out does a panel light need?
A round 18W panel typically needs a 195u2013205mm cut-out. Always check the specification before the ceiling is cut, because the tolerance between brands is small.
Are panel lights dimmable?
Only when the driver says so. A standard constant-current driver is not dimmable, and putting it on a dimmer causes flicker and shortens its life.
Edge-lit or back-lit u2014 which is better?
Back-lit panels are usually brighter per watt and cheaper to repair; edge-lit panels are slimmer. For a high ceiling the difference is barely visible from the floor.
